Visiting Professor of Media Arts, Catalina Jordan Alvarez is among eight artists featured in the 21st annual Open Video Call, a juried online screening series presented by the University of Pennsylvania’s Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) and curated by Philadelphia-based media arts collective Lino Kino.

Alvarez’s film Sound Spring Seq. #6: The School and the Home (produced by Matt Morgan ’99 and co-written by Jeanne Kay ’10 featuring Yellow Springs residents Jalyn Roe, Sumayah Chappelle, and Rukiya Robertson) will premiere on Monday, August 10 at 12:00 pm and will be available online here through August 12.

And, on August 12 from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm EST, Alvarez will join Lino Kino members Emilie Slater and Maya Shengold in conversation via Zoom.

Sound Spring Seq. #6 is an excerpt from a feature-length experimental documentary exploring residents’ entanglements with Yellow Springs history. In this sequence, Jalyn Roe remembers her mother’s friendship with Coretta Scott King (Class of 1951) and recalls meeting Martin Luther King Jr. as a child.

Alvarez’s film includes interviews that are shot as traditional talking-head interviews, but with a key difference. “The on-screen interviewees are two girls who lip-sync over the overdubbed audio. This change creatively subverts one of the basic tropes of documentary filmmaking and brings new meaning to the artist’s otherwise minimalist approach.”
