Director Lydia Dean Pilcher ’80 is an Academy Award nominee for 2014’s “Cutie and the Boxer,” which she produced. She also served as a producer on “The Darjeeling Limited,” “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” and “Queen of Katwe.” In October, she will have two new films released (“A Call to Spy” and “Radium Girls”) which are both based on true historical events with social impact themes.
A Call to Spy
The film “A Call to Spy” premiered at the 2019 Edinburgh International Film Festival in June 2019. The film is a World War II espionage thriller that centers on Winston Churchill’s female recruits who are thrust into a bold mission.
“A Call to Spy” will be released in the U.S. on October 2nd, 2020.
The Synopsis: “At the beginning of WWII, with Britain becoming desperate, Churchill orders his new spy agency — SOE — to recruit and train women as spies. Their daunting mission: conduct sabotage and build a resistance. SOE’s ‘spymistress’ Vera Atkins (Stana Katic of ‘Castle’), recruits two unusual candidates: Virginia Hall (Sarah Megan Thomas of ‘Equity’), an ambitious American with a wooden leg, and Noor Inayat Khan (Radhika Apte of ‘Sacred Games’), a Muslim pacifist. Together, these women help to undermine the Nazi regime in France, leaving an unmistakable legacy in their wake. Inspired by true stories, this original screenplay draws on SOE, OSS, and CIA files.”
Radium Girls
The film “Radium Girls” is a fact-based drama based on true events of the 1920s. It stars Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Joey King (“The Act,”, The Kissing Booth) and Abby Quinn (“Mad About You” reboot, Little Woman). The film made its world premiere at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival and is the recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation Feature Film Award.
“Radium Girls” will be released on October 16th, 2020 in the U.S.
