Assistant Professor of Media Arts Catalina Jordan Alvarez’s short film Sound Spring Seq. #6: The School and the Home was selected as part of the Wexner  Center’s 25th annual Ohio Shorts film festival which spotlights moving-image makers from the Buckeye State.

The festival screening was held on Thursday, April 15 at the South Drive-in Theater in Columbus, and is currently streaming online through Saturday, May 1. Festival awards include the Jury Award, and the Audience Choice Award (vote online through April 25).

Sound Spring Seq. #6 is an excerpt from a feature-length documentary exploring residents’ entanglements with Yellow Springs history. In this sequence, Jalyn Roe (Encore Fellow) remembers her mother’s friendship with Coretta Scott King (Class of 1951) and the racism Coretta experienced when looking for a Co-op. Roe also recalls meeting Martin Luther King Jr. at her parents’ house as a child (when he came to Yellow Springs to give Antioch College’s Commencement Speech). Young actors (Sumayah Chappelle and Rukiya Robertson) lip-sync her dialogue, as they pass down her story to future generations.

Sound Spring Seq. #6 was made possible with the generous support of the Yellow Springs Community Foundation. Additional funding, in-kind donations, and Fellowships were provided by WYSO, Matt Morgan ‘99, Antioch College, College Archivist Scott Sanders at Antiochiana, Wexner Center for the Arts Film/Video Studio Program, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and The Antioch School.

Directed by Catalina Alvarez, the film was produced by Matt Morgan ’99, Elena Dahl, and Catalina Alvarez. The production team included Antiochians Jeanne Kay ’10 (co-writer), Zoë Ritzhaupt ’20 (assistant camera), Ty Clapsaddle ’19 (assistant editor), and Alyssa Navarrette ’19 (production assistant).
